Page views, daily visitors and the counter total: which number means what?

A counter image, a daily visitor report and a period total can show different numbers without a fault. Before comparing them, check the metric, the time period and the counter number. Stats4U measures requests and uses a daily identifier to reduce duplicates; it does not identify individual people.

Identify the number being compared

Open the statistics for the same counter number as the code installed on the website. Read the label beside the number rather than inferring its meaning from its size. A design may show a total, today’s value or another supported metric. A total accumulated by the counter is not the same as a report limited to a selected period.

A page view records a counted request. A daily visitor figure reduces repeated counted visits with the same daily identifier. Neither is a verified person count. Several people using a shared connection and similar browser information can appear together; one person using different devices or connections can appear separately.

Compare the same time period

1. Choose the same counter, metric and dates on both reports. Check the counter’s time zone when comparing a day near midnight.
2. Compare completed days where possible. Today’s value is still changing, and a cached counter image may show an older value until it is requested again.
3. Check whether a configured start value contributes to the displayed counter total. A starting value does not create historical daily visitor records.

For a simple illustrative example, 3 counted page requests from the same daily identifier can contribute 3 page views and 1 daily visitor. If that identifier appears on another day, it can contribute another daily visitor. Adding daily visitor counts across days therefore does not produce unique people for the whole period.

Account for bots and missing requests

Check the counter’s bot setting before comparing totals with another tool. Recognised bots are reported separately, and whether they contribute to a counter depends on its configuration. Bot detection is not perfect: the remaining traffic must not be described as verified human visitors.

A request blocked by the browser or never made cannot be recovered from the visible total. An image that loads only after scrolling may miss visits that end earlier. Conversely, installing the counter twice can create additional requests. These are integration questions, not reasons to replace a visitor number with an estimated person count.

What to do when numbers still differ

Write down the counter number, both metric labels, the exact dates and the time zone. Then check the actual website installation once, including duplicate snippets and the counter number inside them. Use the guide to unexpected totals for the next checks. Do not repeatedly reload someone else’s website to generate test traffic.
